Summer Sights Photography Program

The Summer Sights video and photography program provides a free arts-based summer experience that promotes youth development and community building among 12 to 18 year old girls. Their artistic learning experience is enhanced by a structure which includes bi-weekly trips outside of the local community to visit sites, landmarks and activities including museums, beaches, parks and other sites that they would not likely access on their own.

The program aims to:

• Introduce participants to a form of visual arts through which they can explore creative expression.
• Break down cultural barriers by promoting communication through the arts.
• Support participants’ healthy development through self exploration activities.
• Promote cross-cultural learning and understanding.

Skill building sessions will be offered at the Forest Hills site.  They will address still photography and digital video techniques. Along with gaining technical skills, young women will discuss photography and film as media for self-expression.

One day each week, participants will be engaged in programming with other QCH youth on-site. Activities will include hip-hop classes and organized sports, as well as other recreational activities identified by our program staff.

A culminating event at the end of the summer will allow the girls to share the images they captured during the summer and to reflect on the growth they have achieved as individuals and as a peer group.
