Adult Education Services (AES) in Jackson Heights, serving Western Queens since 1989, has expanded and enriched the scope, type and number of programs it offers since July, 2000, when Queens Community House (then known as Forest Hills Community House) assumed its sponsorship and administration. The program, which includes many new immigrants, serves an incredibly diverse population representing more than 86 countries and speaking over 27 languages. Although the majority of the students are from Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, our services are open to all Queens residents. - We currently provide classes to 2,500 adults in three broad areas of Adult Education: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL); Civics/ Citizenship; and Adult Literacy.
- These services employ 8 full-time and 2 part-time multi-lingual, professional instructors who offer 25 classes a day.
- We have expanded our Community Technology Lab to include 20 computers, which are used in a variety of educational ways. Our Computer Instruction classes, for example, incorporate and combine literacy, ESOL, and technology lessons.
- We also offer an Emerging Literacy Class for students who have limited proficiency and literacy in both English and their native language.
- The program also offers access to immigration and employment assistance. Immigration assistance is provided through our Immigration Specialist who works collaboratively with attorneys in the Legal Aid Society through the Community Based Legal Services project funded by NY Community Trust.
- A variety of youth services are available to the children of our adult students.
Program Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 10:00pm
